About this version
A Christmas Carol (1843) is a wonderful story but the text can be difficult for new readers.
These materials are based around my adapted version, with small changes to make it easier to follow. All of the dialogue is from the original and the most famous quotations are unchanged. Linked to more materials, including complete text & audio My retelling stays close to the spirit of the original can be a bridge to the longer version.
This graded text has been shortened and simplified by vocabulary, grammar and readability.
- shorter paragraphs and sentences
- fewer unfamiliar words
- a focus on the main narrative line & key characters
- less emphasis on physical description
- ideal for GCSE students
- identical stave (chapter) structure allowing cross-reference with the original here

I write graded reading and listening materials for English language learners. These include original stories like Love by Design and simplified versions of classics including Washington Square by Henry James & Oscar Wilde's The Picture Of Dorian Gray.
My books have been published most of the major publishers in the field including Oxford University Press (OUP), OUP (Hong Kong), Longman, Macmillan and Penguin. You can see a partial list here.
Three of my titles were singled out for their ‘particular excellence’ in Bamford & Day’s Extensive Reading in the Second Language Classroom (CUP) where I was described as being ‘amongst the best writers of language learner materials in English’.
